The latest results of the 2022 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study are out and once again, Kia surpassed expectations. Kia finished fourth overall as a brand among all automakers for initial quality, while the Kia Forte compact sedan finished first its segment.
In order to determine which vehicles offer the highest initial quality, Kia looks at a range of variables including the performance of the infotainment system, the engine and mechanical reliability, the safety and connectivity features, and more. J.D. Power surveys over 80,000 consumers for its Initial Quality Study and these consumers have to fill out a comprehensive questionnaire with over 220 questions.
The results are then calculated as an average of the number of problems per 100 vehicles sold to put everybody on even footing. With just 156 problems per 100 vehicles, Kia was well ahead of the industry average of 180 problem per 100 vehicles.
Moreover, Kia did significantly better than Hyundai and Honda which had below average initial quality ratings. The same goes for the Kia Forte which finished first overall in its segment ahead of models like the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sentra, and Honda Civic.
